Mum and stepdad of Tyrell Cobb may face murder trial

The mother and former stepfather of a Gold Coast toddler who died seven years ago, will find out today if they will stand trial for his murder.

Four-year-old Tyrell Cobb was found unconscious at a Biggera Waters home in 2009.

He had suffered 70 injuries to his body and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Massive abdominal trauma and internal bleeding caused the toddler’s death, and doctors say he could have survived if he had been taken to hospital earlier that day.

33-year-old Heidi Strbak and her ex-partner Matthew Scown, 33, are facing a committal hearing, charged with Tyrell’s murder in May 2009.

A Brisbane Magistrates Court has heard the toddler told several family members that Scown had kicked him or “punched him in the stomach”.

His devastated father Jason Cobb recalls his little boy’s last words to him, when he told his dad “I love you, I miss you”.

A magistrate is due to decide today whether the pair will be committed to stand trial.
