Must-see events at Bleach* this year

There are just over three weeks until Bleach* The Gold Coast Festival hits the Gold Coast, so now is the perfect time to start securing your tickets to the most sought after shows.

With over 44 events to choose from, we chatted with the organisers of the cultural extravaganza to find out this year’s must-attend performances and experiences. Here’s what’s worth buying a ticket to:

Verdi’s Requiem
Date: April 27
Where: HOTA’s outdoor stage
What: The blockbuster music concert featuring more than 150 musicians and singers, is performed under the stars, with HOTA’s outdoor stage transformed into a fiery ceremonial sanctuary. Grab a picnic blanket and take in this magical performance on the lawn.


Water Songs
Date: 18-23 April
Where: Multiple venues
What: A musical concert series that will travel through the Gold Coast’s waterways. Travelling minstrels will perform from the waterfront into backyards and public parks along the Gold Coast’s network of canals, creeks and channels.

Date: 24-28 April
Where: Mudgeeraba Showgrounds
What: A “drive-in live-action movie with a difference” by Gold Coast-based dance theatre company, The Farm. Throttle is a B-grade thriller that plays out in front of an audience safely ensconced in their cars.

The Soldier’s Wife
Date: 23-25 April
Where: Multiple venues
What: Some of Queensland’s most highly regarded songwriters have undertaken a truly remarkable journey – to tell the stories of the women whose partners have served in conflict, including 160 soldiers’ wives from the Gold Coast branches of the Australian War Widows of Queensland.

Terror Australis
Date: 16-18 April
Where: HOTA
What: A grindhouse cabaret rampant with black humour, anti-burlesque, live art and Hills-Hoist-pole-dancing.

My Urrwai
Dates: 26-27 April
Where: HOTA
What: A journey into the life stories, family and culture of Torres Strait Island dancer, comic, teacher, TV star and sometime guitarist, Ghenoa Gela, My Urrwai explores the interplay of political, social and colonial expectations that Gela dances with daily.

Dates: 26-27 April
Where: Gold Coast Aquatic Centre
What: Landing invites you to participate or spectate! Presented as an absurd swimming carnival, Landing is conducted over 24 hours in the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre with participants trying to swim the distance from Australia to Manus Island in a continuous relay, guided by people from the local migrant and refugee communities.

Limbo Unhinged
Dates: 17 April – 12 May
Where: The Spiegeltent Gold Coast
What: The mad-genius makers of the sold-out spectacle Blanc de Blanc are back on the Gold Coast to bring you an intoxicating mix of cabaret, circus and acrobatics in Limbo Unhinged — a celebration of otherworldly proportions.

Nyala Bulahbu Gali
Dates: 22 April
Where: The Dust Temple
What: A conversation, a ceremony, a cuppa tea, a song and a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultural frameworks by Kyle Slabb.
