Naked man foils car theft attempt and lets thief go free

There are hopes a young teen might reconsider stealing cars, after one of the strangest encounters on the Gold Coast this week.

The teen was busted trying to steal a car from a home in Burleigh Waters in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The man whose licence and keys he’d just pinched ran from the home stark naked in order to foil the getaway.

CCTV vision, published by Seven Gold Coast News, shows the naked man using jiujitsu moves to restrain the teenager after he stalled the car.

A neighbour then comes out with a wooden stick while the teen begs to be let go.

The naked man, David Rutherford, spoke to 1029 Hot Tomato’s Galey, Emily Jade and Christo about the confrontation this morning.

“I wasn’t thinking, I didn’t think until about halfway through I didn’t even really realize that I was in the nude,” he said.

“I just had so much adrenaline pumping trying to get my car back.”

Despite catching the thief red-handed, a bare-bottomed Mr Rutherford decided to let him go and not call the police.

“I just don’t want to be the person who decides his future, if he goes to jail, all of a sudden he’s in a sh**ty environment.

“Fair enough he could leave my house and go steal another car, if I was to call the police for sure he might end up in jail or something,” Mr Rutherford told Galey, Emily Jade and Christo.
