Navy Rowers to hit Surfers Paradise Beach this weekend

THE NAVY Australian Surf Rowers National League (Navy ASRL) will hold their prestigious national season launch in Surfers Paradise this Saturday, November 8.

The event will see over 100 crews, including 450 surf rowers and 55 surfboats, from Surf Life Saving Clubs across Queensland and Australia hit the beach to launch the premier surf boat racing series.

Navy Commodore David Letts said the event will be officially launched with a dramatic flyover from a Navy helicopter.

“It will be a wonderful sight; the Navy helicopter will hover over the beach, winching Navy seaman down to direct the fire off signal announcing the official launch of the Surfboat season. The Navy Brass Band will also be playing on foreshore,” Navy Commodore Letts said.

“The Navy ASRL is the leading surf boat racing series in Australia, and Surfers Paradise is arguably the most iconic beach location in Australia, so it is the perfect backdrop. We are really looking forward to being at Surfers Paradise for the launch.”

Surfers Paradise Alliance CEO Mike Winlaw said the event promises to be a fantastic spectacle.

“Surfers Paradise is the perfect location for the Navy ASRL event,” Mr Winlaw said.

“We are known for our beautiful beaches and active, healthy lifestyle, so this is really the perfect fit.

“We have such a vibrant beach and sporting culture here in Surfers Paradise and this event promises to be a great showcase of our beautiful location and the incredible ability of the competitors.

“We encourage everyone to head to Surfers Paradise and watch the top seeded male and female surf boat crews from around Australia race it out. It will really be something to see.”
