New box jellyfish species named after Gold Coast boy

A schoolboy who stumbled across a new species of box jellyfish in a Gold Coast canal has had the tiny-tentacled creature named in his honour.

Saxon Thomas was just nine years old when he discovered the unusual looking jellyfish while fishing with two friends and later, with the help of his dad, sent it to the Queensland Museum.

The jellyfish has been named Chiropsella Saxoni to reward Saxon’s curiosity, the museum’s marine expert Merrick Ekins told AAP.
