New push to legalise cannabis and sell it in shops

The Greens have launched a new push to legalise cannabis.

The party wants marijuana to be available for recreational use for anyone over the age of 18.

It will call for a regulated cannabis market with retail shops to be established.

Figures show almost seven million Australians have used cannabis.

Greens Leader Richard Di Natale says the war on drugs has failed.

“The tough-on-drugs approach doesn’t stop people from using it,” Senator Di Natale said.

“Governments around the world are realising that prohibition of cannabis causes more harm than it prevents.”

“Cannabis is a relatively safe drug, it’s safer than tobacco and alcohol.”

Under the Greens’ plan, adults would be able to grow up to six cannabis plants for personal use.
