New ‘surfing’ spider found on the Gold Coast named after Mick Fanning

A NEWLY discovered water spider found on the Gold Coast has been named after surfing legend Mick Fanning.

The arachnid, pictured above, is part of the Pisauridae spider family, which is known to ‘surf’ on water and dive beneath the surface to escape enemies.

It was recently discovered by scientists near Canungra in the Gold Coast hinterland.

Brazil’s Hector Manuel Osório Gonzalez Filho won a global competition to name the new species of spider, which is now officially known as ‘Pisauridae mickfanningi’.

Entrants were asked to submit a name online, a name that both captured the essence of the spider and drew inspiration from World Water Day or a Queensland connection.
