New Titans coach defends his choice of assistants

He’s yet to coach a game in the NRL, but the Titans new coach is already copping criticism.

Gold Coast coach Garth Brennan has defended his appointment of Luke Burt as an assistant coach, saying he wasn’t hired because he played alongside, and coached, Jarryd Hayne.

With reports of Hayne’s future at the Titans up in the air, the appointment of Hayden Knowles and Craig Catterick add to the suggestions that Brennan is building a side around Hayne.

Knowles travelled with the NSW Origin Rep when he trained for the NFL and Catterick coached Hayne at Parramatta.

Jarryd Hayne is contracted to the Titans for the 2018 season but reports emerged while he was at the Rugby League World Cup that he was eager to leave the club and return to Sydney.

The Titans’ pre-season is currently underway and Hayne is yet to feature after Fiji’s stint at the RLWC.
