Newborn found abandoned in manger at church nativity scene

A newborn baby with his umbilical cord still attached has been found abandoned in a manger at a New York church nativity scene.

The baby boy was found wrapped in purple towels beside a statue of Mary at Holy Child Jesus Church in Queens.

The custodian had just set up the nativity scene before going to lunch and returning to hear a baby crying.

Paramedics took the baby to Jamaica Hospital and police are investigating the incident.

Priest Christopher Heanue said one of the couples at the church are looking to adopt the baby just in time for Christmas.

“A young couple in our parish would love to adopt this child and keep this gift in our community. It would make a great Christmas miracle,” Heanue said.

Under New York state law, unwanted babies can be left at certain designated safe haven locations including police stations and churches.
