Newborn found dumped in NSW storm drain

POLICE have identified the mother of a newborn baby boy found dumped in a drain alongside a NSW highway.

A group of cyclists riding on a bike track beside the M7 at Quakers Hill first heard the baby’s screams coming from the drain around 7.30am on Sunday.

Several passersby then worked together to lift the concrete lid off the 2.4m deep drain where they found the baby lying at the bottom, wrapped in a hospital blanket.

After a thorough investigation and check of hospital records, police were able to identify the mother as a 20-year-old woman.

She’s currently assisting police with their investigation.

The malnourished and dehydrated newborn – thought to be no more than three days old – was taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital where it’s understood he is in a serious but stable condition.
