Nine children amongst those killed in horrific apartment fire, New York

19 people, including nine children, have been confirmed dead as a result of a disastrous fire in a high-rise apartment in New York.

The blaze broke out at an apartment building the Bronx area around 11.00 am on January 9, quickly spreading to two out of the 19 floors.

Emergency services identified 63 victims initially, with 32 of those requiring hospitalisation for critical injuries.

While the blaze was contained to two floors, thick smoke spread to multiple other floors in the building.

The death toll is currently at 19 people, including nine children.

New York Mayor Eric Adams said the disaster is ‘one of the worst fires we have witnessed here in modern times in the City of New York’.
