No changes to US gun laws

The US Senate has voted to keep allowing people the Government suspects of being terrorists to arm themselves.

The Republicans opposed Democratic moves to prevent certain people from buying guns.

Speaker Paul Ryan commented there are still too many unknowns about the San Bernardino shootings in which 14 lost their lives.

But he drew a link to mental illness, saying that seems to be one common theme among many mass shootings..

He said that is an issue Congress has already been working on with legislation.

Ryan made a similar point earlier this week after the post-Thanksgiving shooting at a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic.
