Police said the two men then forced the woman inside where they woke her 73-year-old husband and demanded the couple hand over cash and other property.

One of the men allegedly punched the 73-year-old man in the face after a home security alarm was activated.

The armed duo then allegedly ran out of the house and fled the scene empty handed.

A number of police officers, including the dog squad, descended on the area in search for the offenders but they could not be found.

A crime scene was established and examined overnight by forensic specialists.

The 73-year-old man was taken to Westmead Hospital for observation and scans.

The two offenders have only been described as wearing dark clothing and balaclavas.

Inquiries are continuing.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area is asked to contact police.
