NSW ‘disrespectful’ for walking off during Cam Smith’s victory speech

It wasn’t just the viewers at home that were left gobsmacked after witnessing the NSW side walk off during Qld Captain Cameron Smith’s victory speech overnight.

The Qld Maroons have slammed the Blues, labeling them ‘disrespectful’ after they were seen casually strolling off towards the crowd while Smith was congratulating the team on their 18 – 14 game three victory.

During a post-match interview in the change-rooms, Thurston expressed his disappointment, labeling it a “pretty disrespectful act”.

“I don’t want to get into a slanging match here but it was pretty disrespectful. I think that just typifies what their team is about,” Thurston said.

“While Smithy is sitting at the top of the tree for the amount of games that he’s played, the respect that he deserves … I thought it was disrespectful what they did.

“But they got the result in the end and probably didn’t deem it disrespectful just to walk off while he was still saying his speech.”

Social media instantly erupted, with thousands of fans taking to Twitter and Facebook to vent their frustration.

“Just witnessed most appalling lack of good sportsmanship. Paul Gallen and Team walking off ground during Cameron Smith victory speech,” one fan wrote.

“Cam Smith giving NSW and Gallen PERSONAL praise and they couldn’t be ars*d to stay, turn backs and walk away. Lacking respect” wrote another.

When Cameron Smith was asked about the incident, he simply replied: “It’s just something our team wouldn’t do.”

The NSW Blues defeated Qld 18 – 14 in a nail biting finish at ANZ stadium, however Qld walked away the 2016 series winners after claiming victory in games one and two.
