NSW: Girl shot on busy Riverina street

TWO men have been arrested and charged after a young girl was randomly shot with an air rifle on a busy street in the NSW Riverina City of Wagga Wagga.

Police say the girl and her friend, both aged 16, were riding along Johnson Street at about 2.30pm on Friday when they heard two shots ring out from a nearby unit.

One of the girls was struck by a projectile on the arm, causing bruising.

She was taken to the Wagga Wagga Base Hospital for treatment and the incident was reported to police.

Police attended the Johnston Street unit where they allegedly seized a .177 Brno air rifle and spoke to 10-to-12 people who were inside.

After interviewing a number of witnesses, two males, aged 19 and 18, were arrested and charged with possessing an unregistered firearm.

Police from Wagga Wagga Local Area Command continue to conduct inquiries into the incident and anyone with information is urged to come forward.
