NSW man charged after allegedly trying to run over officers

A man has been charged after driving at high speed towards two police officers in a dramatic chase in Cameron Park.

Police were patrolling Craighall Street at around 11pm on Sunday when they spotted a Holden ute with false number plates.

When they tried to approach the car, the man behind the wheel allegedly drove at speed toward two officers.

The officers were able to jump clear of the vehicle and escaped unharmed.

They jumped in to their patrol car and followed the ute west along George Booth Drive, before it crashed into another marked police vehicle on Withers Street.

The Holden ute was later located abandoned down an embankment near West Wallsend.

The dog squad unit was called in to help officers find the driver and a short time later they arrested a 35-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman.

The woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital as a precaution, where she remains.

The 35-year-old man was taken to Lake Macquarie Police Station and charged with:

  • Police pursuit (Skye’s Law)
  • Use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention x2
  • Drive suspended
  • Vehicle displaying unauthorised number plate
  • Unregistered vehicle
  • Four outstanding warrants

The man was refused bail to appear at Toronto Local Court today.
