NSW town evacuated ahead of “once in a generation” flood

THE residents of Forbes have been ordered to evacuated immediately as the central-western NSW town braces for a major “once in a generation” flood event.

Residents have been ordered to leave their homes by 5pm this afternoon with the community expected to be inundated by floodwaters from the swollen Lachlan River.

The river is predicted to reach 10.65 metres by midday tomorrow which is the same height of the flood which devastated the town in 1990 – 26-years-ago – but forecasters warn it could get even higher.

The current evacuation order covers areas to the town’s north, south, south-west, east and the CBD. Scroll down to view a full list of affected streets.

The town’s 7,500 residents have been warned not to delay their evacuation, with roads likely to become congested, closed or submerged and parts of the town isolated.

“You could become trapped and need rescuing,” the order reads. “Remaining in flooded areas is dangerous and may place your life at risk.”

NSW SES Deputy Commissioner Mark Morrow said it could be a week before the flood subsides, with water levels likely to exceed the predicted peak height of 10.65 metres in some places.

The country town is likely to be cut in half tomorrow.

Residents in the evacuation zones are urged to go and stay with family or friends or make other accommodation arrangements.

An evacuation centre has been set up by Community Services at Forbes High School, which is located on Wyndham Avenue.

For those who are unable to get to the school, an assembly area has been set up at the Jemalong Regional Education Centre, which is located south of Battye Street Floodway.

More than a month of heavy rainfall has resulted in unseasonal flooding right across inland NSW, with warnings in place for a total 11 river systems.
