The top end of Australia is on cyclone watch with a tropical low tipped to develop early next week.
The latest Tropical Cyclone Outlook bulletin issued by the Bureau of Meteorology on Saturday afternoon states the monsoon trough is expected to become established over the Northern Region during the weekend.

The BoM says, “As the monsoon becomes more active a low is expected to form over the Top End or Gulf of Carpentaria early next week”.
“During next week, if the low is in the Gulf of Carpentaria it has a reasonable chance of intensifying (into a cyclone).”
The bureau says if a cyclone were to form, it would be called Stan and would develop from Tuesday onwards and more likely track east towards Queensland, rather than west into the Territory.
Stan would be the first cyclone to threaten Australia this season.
