Nurse accused of trying to suffocate elderly patient with pillow

A nurse has been charged after allegedly attempting to suffocate an elderly patient with a pillow at a hospital in Sydney.

The horrific alleged assault happened whilst the nurse was on nightshift at a hospital on Eldridge Road in Bankstown yesterday.

Police allege the 50-year-old male nurse pushed a pillow into the face of an 80-year-old man and forcibly held him down before another staff member intervened.

Officers were informed of the incident and local detectives attended the hospital yesterday where they seized a number of items for forensic examination.

Following inquiries, police arrested the 50-year-old man when he arrived at the hospital about 4pm on Thursday.

He was taken to Bankstown Police Station, where he was charged with attempt to strangle/suffocate with intent to murder, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Bankstown Local Court today.

The health of the elderly man, who also suffered a cut to his arm during the horrific ordeal, is continuing to be monitored.
