Off-duty police officer punched unconscious while trying to restrain man

AN off-duty police officer has been punched unconscious whilst trying to stop a man running from the scene of a traffic crash at Maroochydore.

The shocking incident unfolded around 5.00am on Monday, when a 28-year-old moped rider was involved in a crash on Kingsford Smith Parade.

“The off-duty male police officer attempted to prevent the moped rider from leaving the scene when it will be alleged he punched the officer a number of times causing him to lose consciousness,” police said in a statement.

A woman who witnessed the brutal blow ran to the officer’s aid, however she was also allegedly punched by the man.

A 28-year-old man from Caloundra was charged at a bedside hearing with one count each of serious assault police, assault occasioning bodily harm and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on June 22.
