Officers forced to kick down door after witnessing man violently assaulting woman

Police have been forced to break into a home at Lake Illawarra after witnessing a man brutally assaulting a woman.

Around 2.00pm yesterday, officers raced to Middlesex Street at Berkeley after receiving a triple zero call about an ongoing domestic dispute.

On arrival at the home, officers kicked open the front door after observing a 45-year-old man assaulting a 30-year-old woman.

Police were forced to use OC spray on the man after he began assaulting the officers trying to arrest him.

While on the way to Lake Illawarra Police Station the man complained of chest pains with paramedics taking him to Wollongong Hospital where he remains under guard.

Investigations into the assault are ongoing, with police expected to lay charges.
