One dead, another airlifted to hospital after head-on crash

ONE person has died and another has been airlifted to hospital in a serious condition following a horror head-on crash in southern NSW.

It happened on Gocup Road, 10km north of Tumut, around 8.40am on Sunday.

Police said the driver of a Toyota Rav 4 suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision and died at the scene before they could be taken to hospital.

A passenger from the same vehicle was seriously injured and has been airlifted to Canberra Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the second vehicle, believed to be a dual cab ute, is understood to have escaped serious injury.

They have been taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

The genders and ages of those involved in the crash were not immediately known.

Gocup Road remains closed in both directions between Tumut and the Hume Highway while the scene of the crash is examined.

The road is expected to remain closed for several hours, with diversions in place.
