One dead after car drives into oncoming traffic on Pacific Highway

A WOMAN has died after driving her car into oncoming traffic on the Pacific Highway at Lake Macquarie.

Police said the 38-year-old woman was driving north in the southbound lanes of the highway at Cams Wharf when her Hyundai Getz smashed head-on into an oncoming Holden Commodore just after 2am.

It’s understood the woman was killed on impact, while the 49-year-old man behind the wheel of the Holden was rushed to the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle with serious injuries.

Police from the Lake Macquarie Local Area Command attended and established a crime scene.

As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident continue, police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the Hyundai driving prior to the crash to come forward.

Police will now prepare a report for the Coroner.
