One dead after station wagon drives into oncoming traffic on Pacific Highway

A MAN has been killed in a horror head-on crash between two station wagons on the NSW Mid North Coast.

The accident happened on the Pacific Highway at Rainbow Flat, near Taree around 4pm on Tuesday.

Police said a Mitsubishi station wagon and a Subaru wagon collided head-on about 2km south of The Lakes Way.

Sadly, the driver and sole occupant of the Subaru, a 69-year-old man died at the scene.

The driver and sole occupant of the Mitsubishi, an 18-year-old woman, suffered multiple injuries.

She was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Port Macquarie District Hospital.

Police said she was transported in a stable condition and also underwent mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Investigators believe the Mitsubishi may have been travelling north in the southbound lanes.

A crime scene was established and examined by officers from the Mid North Coast Crash Investigation Unit.
