5.30PM: A GRASS fire burning along the Hume Highway near Gundagai in the NSW Riverina is being controlled.
The blaze broke out amid 40 degree heat and gusty westerly winds in the area of Hume HWY at Coolac near Gobarralong Road and has been burning for the majority of the afternoon.
The Rural Fire Service warning has since been downgraded to Advice level after a southerly wind change eased conditions as it swept across the fire ground.

Crews will remain on scene throughout the night to mop up and black out burning trees in the area.
The Hume Highway is now open in both directions, although there are a number of local road closures.
EARLIER: FIRE FIGHTERS are battling a large grass fire which has broken out near Gundagai in the NSW Riverina amid 40 degree heat and gusty westerly winds.
The NSW Rural Fire Service has issued a Watch and Act message for the out-of-control blaze currently burning along the Hume Highway at Coolac near Gobarralong Road.
The highway was closed in a southerly direction, but has since reopened.
Firefighters are working to contain the fire and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
