Pair flee into Gold Coast waterway after abandoning stolen car

Police are searching for two people who fled into a canal after a stolen car incident on the Gold Coast this morning.

Officers responded to a stolen vehicle call around 8.15am, which was spotted a short time later in Ron Penhaligon Way.

The car failed to stop for police and sped off.

It was later tracked down abandoned in Markeri Street, with a ripped up tyre.

Members of the public then told police that two people – a man and a woman – had ran into a nearby canal.

Officers are working on getting vessels into the water, and the water police are currently involved in the search.

The two have been described as wearing hoodies and carrying a satchel.

A witness told myGC that it appeared one was in ‘tradie gear’, and was trying to get away on a paddle board.

Police are yet to locate the pair, though search efforts are focusing on the area and water around Port Jackson Boulevard.

The incident was still underway at the time of writing.
