Pair stranded in ocean, attacked by jellyfish after boat sinks on fishing trip

TWO fishermen have been found floating in the ocean, covered in jellyfish stings, after their boat sunk offshore of Deception Bay this morning.

Police said the pair’s 3.9-metre dinghy began taking on water just off Beachmere Beach around 4.30am.

Water Police, Volunteer Marine Rescue, the Coast Guard and an emergency helicopter were dispatched to the area to locate the vessel and rescue the men.

The chopper located the pair, aged 23 and 25, floating in the ocean around one nautical mile offshore. They’d been attacked by jellyfish and had to be transported to hospital for treatment.

Sergeant Daniel Moyle from the Brisbane Water Police said the men were lucky to have survived.

“It’s fortunate that these fishermen were wearing life jackets as this could have ended quite differently,” Sergeant Moyle said.

“Police would like to use this incident as an opportunity to warn boaties to check their vessels for seaworthiness, emergency supplies and age appropriate life jackets.”
