Parents charged after leaving children, aged 4 and 2, home alone

A 4-year-old girl found wandering the streets of Nelson Bay in NSW on the weekend has lead police to her family’s unit, where they discovered her and her two-year-old sister home alone.

Officers made the shocking discovery after a member of the public located the young girl walking along Government Road by herself at 1.45am on Sunday morning.

“The child indicated where her home was and officers searched the unit, locating another child asleep in a cot,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Officers contacted the children’s parents who returned to the unit and were spoken to by investigators.

They then searched the woman’s handbag, where they allegedly located cannabis and white powder believed to be methylamphetamine.

The children, aged 4 and 2 were removed from their parents’ custody and a FACs notification was made.

Officers have now charged the parents with abandon/expose child under 7 cause danger serious injury, and possess prohibited drug.

They are expected to appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 27 November.
