Paris’s iconic Eiffel Tower shut, area evacuated as anti-terror police investigate ‘intruder’

Paris’s famous Eiffel Tower has been closed for several hours after a man carrying a backpack was spotted scaling the iconic tourist attraction before opening hours.

The alarm was raised early on Sunday and the area was evacuated while anti-terror police carried out a search after “an individual was seen in the structure with a backpack.”

A helicopter was also sent to carry out an inspection along with firefighters.

The man was unable to be located and nothing suspicious was found.

The tower was reopened at 2.45pm local time.

France is on high alert following a series of terror attacks this year.
