JOEL Parkinson has overcome a rocky start to progress to the next round of the Surfest Men’s Pro in Newcastle.
The Coolangatta surfer failed to land two finishing moves late in the opening heat yesterday before recovering to finish second with a two-wave total of 10.17.
The Newcastle Herald reports, fellow Cooly local Brent Dorrington topped the score-sheet with 13.7.

Parkinson was relieved to get through his heat after a disrupted preparation: “I didn’t really enjoy myself. I felt so rusty. It’s been a while.”
“We had a good run of waves at home through January, but the last 10 days it’s been flat, so I haven’t done a lot of surfing. I had a complete week of nothing, so it was good to get back in the water,” Parko added.
