Parkwood International unveils expansion plans

BIG NEWS coming out of a Gold Coast Golf Course, which unveiled upgraded facilities, including new-look function rooms and mini golf over a year ago.

Parkwood International sold to new owners four years ago and they developed a master plan.

Managing Director Luke Altschwager said they have invested about $5 million to date.

He said City of Gold Coast had just approved expansion plans, which have been in the pipeline for about 18 months.

They will add a Hotel Resort, an indoor Sport and Recreation Centre which will host soccer, cricket and netball.

It will also house a gym, a sports medical centre of excellence and a bunch of commercial tenancies.

Mr Altschwager admitted that golf course development has not “been an easy thing in the past, trying to do anything to green space so we needed to look at a really integrated solution for the community even as a privately owned piece of dirt Council sees them as community assets for green space”.

Parkwood International decided to approach Council after hearing that the current Sports Centre at Parkwood would close to make way for the Commonwealth Games Athlete’s Village.

Mr Altschwager said it was a “vibrant business with around about 100,000 people coming annually, just local residents playing their sport and doing their thing and that got shut down due to the Commonwealth Games”.

He said they “wanted to make sure that business didn’t completely die, we’re basically building a state-of-the-art version of what was a tin shed over there”.

The Sports Centre planned for Parkwood International on Napper Road will be a third larger, “it’s a perfect fit, we’re only a kilometre from where it was and we’ll be open within 12 months and I think that, to me, is the key feature we’ve added”.
