Pedestrian killed in horrific accident

A MAN has tragically died after being run over by up to four vehicles in a horrific accident at Newcastle.

The tragedy happened on Maitland Road at Sandgate shortly after 8.35pm on Friday.

Police said the 72-year-old man was on the median strip and went to cross the road when he was struck by a vehicle travelling east.

The impact catapulted the man through the air and into the path of oncoming traffic in the second eastbound lane.

Tragically, police said the man was then struck by a further three vehicles.

He could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

All four drivers involving the horrific accident were taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended and established a crime scene.

They are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
