Pedestrian mowed down by alleged drunk driver in NSW

A WOMAN in her 20s has been rushed to hospital in a serious condition after being mowed down by a drunk driver at Nelson Bay, north of Newcastle.

The 25-year-old woman was walking along Magnus Street shortly after midnight last night when she was struck by a Mazda ute.

The Mazda then careened out of control, crossed the road and slammed into the front of a house.

The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene before she was taken to John Hunter Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Mazda, a 43-year-old man, suffered minor injuries.

He was breath tested at the scene and allegedly returned a positive reading.

The 43-year-old was arrested and taken to Nelson bay Police Station where he was subjected to a secondary test and returned an alleged reading of 0.170.

The local Nelson Bay man was charged with high-range drink-driving and cause bodily harm by misconduct.

He is due to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday, 28 August.
