Police appeal for help to identify man found dead in bushland

POLICE are appealing for assistance from the public to help identify a man found dead in bushland near Newcastle.

The man’s full-clothed body was found near a tree off Charlestown Rd at Charlestown on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

A crime scene was established, but police have since said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

They have, however, so far been unable to identify the man who is described only as being Caucasian in appearance, aged in his 50s and around 162cm tall.

The man is believed to have been homeless and was wearing a black baseball cap, black hoodie, tight black skinny jeans and skate shoes when he was found.

It’s understood the man frequented the Warners Bay, Charlestown, Cardiff and Kotara South areas, and was usually seen drinking a coffee and carrying plastic shopping bags.

Police said the man was also often seen wearing plastic bags on the inside of his shoes.

Anyone who may be able to identify the man, or may have any information that could assist police, is urged to come forward and call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
