Police appeal for witnesses after referee assaulted, knocked unconscious

A soccer referee has been rushed to hospital after being brutally assaulted during a match at Bateau Bay on the NSW Central Coast.

Police said the violent incident happened around 12.20pm on Sunday, whilst the 56-year-old man was refereeing a third-grade match at Pat Morley Oval.

“It’s alleged a brawl, involving players and staff from opposing teams, occurred on the side lines and when the referee intervened, he was struck on the back of the head and fell to the ground unconscious,” police said in a statement.

The man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Gosford Hospital in a stable condition.

An investigation is now underway with officers appealing for any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police or anyone with mobile phone footage of the incident to come forward and contact them.
