Police dog run over and killed by civilian car in Queensland training exercise

A POLICE dog has been run over and killed in a freak accident while on a training mission in Queensland.

The awful accident happened in an alleyway off the M1 at Springwood in Logan on Saturday night.

Police Dog Jeru and his handler had just completed an after dark training exercise when tragedy struck.

Jeru was struck by a civilian car after running towards his handler’s vehicle to get back into his enclosure.

“As PD Jeru went around the front of the police car and onto the roadway, he was hit by a passing car that was unable to avoid him,” Police said in a statement.

He was rushed to a nearby vet but, to the devastation of his owner, was unable to be saved.

“The Queensland Police Service takes the safety and well-being of all police dogs very seriously and sees them as valued members of the police family,” police said.

The State Capability Coordinator (Dog Squad) will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
