Police hunt driver accused of trying to mow down woman on bike

POLICE are hunting a driver who allegedly deliberately tried mowing down a woman on a bike in Melbourne.

The terrifying incident took place at Northcote, in the city’s inner north-east, around 9.30pm last Friday.

Police said the 26-year-old woman was cycling along Merri Parade, away from the intersection of St Georges Road and Charles Street, when she was almost run down.

A 4WD utility allegedly mounted the footpath near Union Street and drove directly at the woman.

Police said the woman was forced to swerve out of the vehicle’s way as it drove toward her at speed.

The driver of the ute then allegedly performed a U-turn and drove at the woman a second time.

Terrified, police said the woman pedaled toward Union Street where she was forced to squeeze through traffic to escape the driver’s rampage.

The vehicle is described only as being an older model white 4WD utility.

“It is believed the utility was being driven by a male and he was possibly in the company of a passenger,” police said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or believes they may have dashcam footage of the chaos or of the vehicle driving through the area is urged to come forward and call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
