Police hunt weapon used to shoot young kayaker in the head on the Gold Coast

POLICE are still trying to find the weapon used to shoot a kayaker in the head on the Gold Coast on Saturday afternoon.

The victim, a 25-year-old man from Seventeen Mile Rocks, was paddling a canoe up Tallebudgera Creek with his girlfriend when he was struck in the head by a projectile, thought to be shot from an air-powered rifle or slug gun.

Police said the couple’s canoe was located about 20-30 metres off the north bank of the river, near the intersection of Elanora and Awoonga drivers, when the man, who reported hearing a ‘crack’ immediately before impact, was struck.

The pair returned to shore where the man was treated at the scene for a serious, but non-life threatening gash to the side of his head.

The incident sparked a massive land, air and water search, but no weapon or suspect could be found.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have either heard a gunshot or who may have witnessed anyone acting suspiciously, in particular on the north side of the creek, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Fortunately, the man’s girlfriend was not injured.
