Man charged after woman killed in hit and run in NSW

UPDATE @ Dec 15, 9.15am: A man who fled the scene of a crash which claimed the life of a woman in Newcastle yesterday has handed himself into police.

The accident, involving a white ute and motorised scooter, occurred on Hannell Street at Wickham, just after 9.00am.

The driver of the scooter, a 36-year-old woman, was rushed to John Hunter Hospital but died shortly after arrival.

The driver of the ute, who was described to police as wearing high visibility clothing with blood on his face, allegedly ran from the scene.

Around 4 hours later, a 31-year-old man attended Waratah Police Station where he was arrested.

He has since been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous and fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death.

The man was granted bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 2 February 2017.

EARLIER @ Dec 14, 10.50am: Police are on the hunt for a ‘bloodied driver’ after he fled the scene of a crash which claimed the life of a woman in Newcastle this morning.

The accident, involving a white ute and motorised scooter, occurred on Hannell Street at Wickham, just after 9.00am.

The driver of the scooter, a 36-year-old woman, was rushed to John Hunter Hospital but died shortly after arrival.

The driver of the ute, who was described to police as wearing high visibility clothing with blood on his face, ran from the scene.

A major search for him is currently underway.

He is described as bening about 175-180cm tall with short brown hair.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the whereabouts of the man are urged to call Crime Stoppers.
