Police injured in crash while escorting Royals to Opening Ceremony

TWO police officers were in hospital last night, after crashing their motorbikes while escorting the Royal motorcade to the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

The motorcade was travelling along the Gold Coast Highway in Southport around 7.30pm when Queensland Police said the two motorbike officers collided with each other.

A 27-year-old male officer was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while a second male officer, aged 42, was taken to hospital as a precaution.

In a statement, Queensland Police said the families of the injured officers were notified of the incident immediately after the collision.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
