Police kick down door to rescue woman being bashed in NSW home

POLICE have been forced to kick down the door of a house in Wollongong to rescue a woman being bashed by a man inside.

Officers were called to reports of a domestic disturbance at the Middlesex Street home in Berkeley shortly after 2pm on Wednesday.

When police arrived, they witnessed a 45-year-old man assaulting a 30-year-old woman inside the home.

Officers kicked open the front door and raced inside the rescue the woman. As they went to detain the man, he allegedly resisted and began assaulting them.

The aggressive man was eventually detained and handcuffed after police doused him in pepper spray.their pepper spray.

He was taken to the Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was treated by paramedics. He was then transported to Wollongong Hospital after complaining of chest pains.

The man was released shortly after midnight transferred back to the police station where he was charged with contravene AVO, domestic violence assault ABH, two counts of assault police and resist arrest.

He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today.

The 30-year-old woman was treated by paramedics at the home. She did not need to be transported to hospital.
