Police negotiating with man holed up inside Gold Coast high rise

UPDATE 12.30PM | A man is now in police custody after spending hours locked up inside a high rise apartment.

Emergency services were called to the Meriton in Southport around 5.30am, following the alleged assault of a woman.

Police report the woman – believed to be in her 30s – was able to get out of the apartment and was taken to hospital for minor injuries.

Negotiators remained on scene all morning, after a man then barricaded himself inside a room.

They were finally able to get to him around midday.

He’s been taken to Robina Hospital for treatment.

EARLIER 11.00AM | Police are negotiating with a man who’s barricaded himself inside a high rise apartment.

Emergency services were called to the Meriton in Southport around 5.30am, following the alleged assault of a woman.

Police report the woman – believed to be in her 30s – was able to get out of the apartment, before the man locked himself inside a room.

They’ve remained on scene this morning trying to negotiate with him.

Both the man and woman are believed to be under the influence of drugs.

Three police crews are at the scene, along with paramedics.

The situation is still unfolding.
