Police officer charged with historical child sex offences

A POLICE officer has been arrested and charged with historical child sex offences over crimes he allegedly committed when he was a teenager.

Following inquiries from the Professional Standards Command, the senior constable from the NSW Hunter region was arrested at his home on Thursday morning.

He stands accused of indecently assaulting and raping a girl under the age of 10 in the 1990s, when he was just 15.

The senior constable was taken to Belmont Police Station and charged with six counts of indecently assaulting a child under the age of 10, and two counts of having sex with a child under the age of 10.

The officer is identified only as being attached to the Northern Region.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Toronto Local Court on Wednesday March, 28.

In a statement, NSW Police said although the man was not a serving officer at the time of the alleged offences, his duty status was now ‘under review’.
