Police officer injured, car thief on the run after pursuits in far north NSW

A POLICE officer has been injured after a car thief lead police on two pursuits through far northern NSW.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a Subaru Liberty – bearing Queensland registration plates – was allegedly stolen from a home in Cabarita Beach.

Around 1.30pm, officers spotted the vehicle driving erratically, at speeds of up to 100km/h along Byangum Road, Murwillumbah.

The man behind the wheel apparently ditched the car and then ran off on foot.

A short time later, a white Hyundai i20 was allegedly stolen from a home at Bray Park.

Police eventually found that vehicle and a second pursuit was initiated.

It continued out of the Murwillumbah area, with the vehicle allegedly travelling at speeds of up to 150km/h, before eventually slamming into a highway patrol vehicle along Commissioners Creek Road, Commissioners Creek.

The man ran off again and remains on the run this morning despite the efforts of the dog squad and Queensland PolAir.

A male senior constable was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital for treatment to minor soft tissue damage; he has since been released.

Inquiries are continuing.
