Police officer stabbed in chest at Cairns shopping centre

A Police officer is in a serious condition after being stabbed at a shopping centre in Far North Queensland.

The 50-year-old male officer was patrolling the Cairns Central shopping centre around 2.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say the officer came across a man in a stairwell before the man allegedly stabbed him twice in the chest.

The officer was rushed to Cairns Hospital and is currently in a stable condition.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at a nearby home a short time later.

Superintendent Chris Hodgman says the alleged offender was known to the officer.

“The officer works in one of our squads that has constant contact with offenders, so he knew who this person was,” Superintendent Hodgman said.

“An altercation occurred whilst the officer was conducting his duties, and whilst they were struggling the officer was stabbed.”

Superintendent Hodgman says the stabbing was a random incident.

A search is continuing for the weapon used.
