Police probe reports of fake cop lurking in Sydney’s inner west

DETECTIVES are appealing for information after a man claimed he was robbed by a fake police officer in Leichhardt yesterday.

Police say the 21-year-old was walking along Piper Street when a black sedan stopped beside him about 2am on Sunday.

The male driver allegedly got out of the car and approached the young man, claiming he was a police officer.

He reportedly demanded to see the man’s identification, before taking his wallet and phone.

Police have been told the impersonator, described as being of Caucasian appearance and aged in 20s with a slim build, returned to his car to allegedly perform checks, but drove away.

He was wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans.

The 21-year-old became suspicious and attended Marrickville Police Station to report the incident.

Investigators are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that may be able to assist with the investigation to come forward and contact Glebe Police Station on 02 9552 8099.
