Police probe suspicious circumstances around Sydney house fire

Police are investigating suspicious circumstances surrounding a house fire in Sydney’s west in which a man, woman and young child managed to escape overnight.

Fire fighters were called to the house ablaze on Bridge Road at Westmead at around 10.15pm.

Crews arrived to find flames coming from the rear of the home.

Police say the fire was extinguished shortly after 10.30pm.

A 38-year-old man, a 37-year-old woman and a seven-year-old girl were in the home at the time and were able to escape after being awoken by smoke detectors.

The man was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

A crime scene was established at the address and was expected to be examined by forensic police this morning.

Police said while the cause of the fire is not yet known, initial investigations suggest it may be suspicious.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
