Man found on footpath with critical head injuries dies in Gold Coast hospital

A MAN who was found unconscious on a footpath with critical head injuries at Ballina last weekend has sadly lost his fight for life and died in a hospital on the Gold Coast.

Aaron Marks, 38, was found badly injured on a footpath in River Street around 2am on Sunday. He was unconscious and suffering from life-threatening head injuries, police said.

He was airlifted to the Gold Coast University Hospital where he spent almost four days on life support.

In a statement this morning, NSW Police confirmed Mr Marks was pronounced dead on Wednesday.

Mystery continues to surround how the 38-year-old man from Iluka sustained his injuries.

Police say Mr Marks had been drinking at the Ballina RSL Club on Saturday night and was captured on CCTV leaving the licenced premises around 11.55pm.

The lack of leads so far has prompted investigators to issue a public appeal for information.

Strike Force Bulgundara has been formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The strike force involves both local police and detectives from the state’s Homicide Squad.

Anyone with information that could assist police with their investigation, or anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the incident is urged to come forward.
