Police rescue sleeping woman from burning car

POLICE have dragged a woman from a burning car in a dramatic rescue in Melbourne’s north.

It’s understood the 19-year-old woman had fallen asleep in her car which was parked on Sydney Road in Brunswick when it caught fire around 2am.

A member of the public raised the alarm after noticing the young woman was trapped inside the burning vehicle.


Police officers used batons to smash the car’s windows and pull the woman to safety.

She was later taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. A police officer was also taken to hospital for treatment to cuts on hands sustained during the rescue.

Investigators say the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
