The Police Rescue Squad had to be called in to break up a wild brawl that erupted in the heart of Sydney overnight.

Police say the melee erupted in Martin Place when a fight broke out between two groups of males inside an Elizabeth Street hotel shortly after 1.30am on Sunday.

Security officers were able to separate the groups and eject several men from the premises, however the fight continued on the street.

Dozens of officers, including the Police Rescue Squad, raced to the scene where they were forced to deploy their OC spray to restrain four males. Another man was struck with a baton.

The crowd quickly dispersed, but not before four males were arrested.

Two of them were issued with Criminal Infringement Notices for offensive behaviour, while the other two were taken to Day Street Police Station where they are currently assisting police with their inquiries.

One man suffered lacerations to his hand during the melee, but there were no other serious injuries reported.

Investigators have appealed for anyone that might have witnessed the incident or with information about those involved to contact Crime Stoppers.
